If you go online and search for "how to do SEO," you’re going to find a lot of people trying to make it sound complicated. They want you to believe there’s a secret "trick" to getting on the first page of Google.
I’m here to tell you that in 2026, most of that is total nonsense.
Google has spent billions of dollars making sure their system can tell the difference between a real, helpful business and a "fake" website full of keywords. If you want your business to show up when people search, you have to stop trying to trick the computer and start being useful to people.
The "Common Sense" Way to Get Found
If you have a website, forget about "backlinks" and "meta tags" for a second. Ask yourself: If I were a customer, would I actually like reading this?
Most business sites are boring. They use stock photos and talk in circles. To actually rank higher, try this instead:
1. Answer the phone calls you already get. Every day, people call you and ask the same three or four questions. Write those questions down. Then, write a simple page on your site answering them exactly how you would explain it over the phone. When someone types that same question into Google, Google is going to see that you have the most honest, direct answer. That is the best SEO you can ever do.
2. Your Google Map is your real "Homepage." For a local business, the "Map Pack" (those three businesses that show up at the top of a search) is where all the money is.
Don’t just let it sit there.
Take a photo of your warehouse or your truck today and post it to your profile.
When a customer is standing in front of you and says, "Great job," ask them to leave a review right then. Google sees that activity. They see that people are actually visiting you and talking to you. That tells them you are a real, trusted business.
3. Stop with the "Professional" talk. I see so many businesses using big words like comprehensive or innovative solutions. Nobody searches for those words. People search for "roofing that doesn't leak" or "sheets that stay cool." Use the words your customers use. If you talk like a neighbor, people will trust you like a neighbor.
The Bottom Line
SEO isn't a math problem you have to solve. It’s just a way to prove to Google that you are a real person who does good work.
Stop trying to find the "perfect" keyword. Just be the most helpful person in your industry. If you provide the best information, Google will eventually put you at the top because that’s what their users want. It’s not about being the biggest company; it’s about being the one that actually answers the question.
