I’ve spent a lot of time talking to business owners who are tired of hearing the same buzzwords. They get calls every day from "agencies" promising them the world, using words that sound like they came out of a textbook.
But if you strip everything away, digital marketing is really just about two things: Being seen and being trusted. Here is the "normal" person’s guide to getting it right this year.
1. Stop Trying to Go Viral
Most people think they need a million views to be successful. You don’t. If you sell roofing, you don't need a teenager in another country to see your video. You need the ten people in your city who have a leaking roof right now to see it.
Instead of trying to be "famous," try to be helpful. Post a video showing exactly how your product handles a heavy storm. Don't worry about the lighting or the background noise. People trust a shaky video from a real job site more than a polished commercial that looks like a movie.
2. Your "Google Map" is Your Best Friend
If you have a physical location or serve a specific area, your Google Business Profile is more important than almost anything else. When someone’s roof is leaking, they don't go to Instagram; they go to Google and type "roofing near me."
Keep it simple:
Upload real photos of your warehouse.
Ask your happy customers to leave a review.
Reply to those reviews like a human.
3. The "5-Minute" Rule
You can spend thousands on the best ads in the world, but if you don't answer the phone, you’re throwing money in the trash.
In 2026, people have no patience. If someone fills out a form or sends you a message, they are usually doing the same thing to three of your competitors. The person who calls back first is almost always the one who gets the job.
4. Don't Be Afraid of "Friction"
A lot of marketers will tell you to make it "easy" for people to contact you. But sometimes, making it too easy just gets you a bunch of people who aren't serious.
If you’re running ads, don't be afraid to ask a specific question like: "Is this for a new house or a repair?" The people who take the time to answer that are the ones worth your time. The ones who won't answer it probably wouldn't have bought from you anyway.
The internet is full of "noise" right now. Everyone is using AI to write their posts and make their images. The easiest way for you to stand out is to just be normal. Talk to your customers like you’re having a coffee with them. Show them the real work you do. Be honest about your prices. In a world full of robots, a real human being is the most powerful marketing tool you have.
